Dr. Wouter Hoogkamer of the University of Massachusetts Integrative Locomotion Lab on the science seminar on the biomechanics and energetics of modern marathon racing shoes.
Abstract
On September 25th, Eliud Kipchoge broke his own marathon world record, clocking a time of 2:01:09 in Berlin. In 2019 he had already run the marathon distance in less than 2 hours, but for that event he used fresh pacers which made that performance ineligible for world record purposes. While Eliud Kipchoge is considered the greatest marathon runner of all time, it can be argued that his outstanding performances can at least partly be attributed to recent advances in running shoe technology. Dr. Hoogkamer will present the science on the biomechanics and energetics of modern marathon racing shoes to support this bold claim.
