Alessio Puleo presented his work at ISBS 2017 challenging the role of central factors in the development of muscle fatigue.

Does Central Fatigue Limit Muscle Force Generation Capacity During Fatigue?

Mechanisms of muscle fatigue are commonly divided into peripheral factors, which develop within the muscle and impair muscle performance, and central factors, which are thought to arise within the central nervous system and limit muscle force production. Mr. Puleo used a force model to investigate the assessment of central fatigue using the twitch interpolation technique, and found that peripheral factors alone are sufficient to reproduce empirical observations that are commonly attributed to the development of central fatigue during repeated or sustained submaximal contractions.
