Engineering

Speech research engineers at Delsys aim to create technology that can improve the management of sensorimotor disorders of voice and speech. This position integrates techniques from biomedical, electrical, and rehabilitation engineering with principles from computer science, speech science, and communication disorders. This role involves developing computational methods to improve the clinical assessment of voice disorders, as well as applying quantitative techniques to enhance access to alternative communication for individuals with severe motor impairments (e.g., due to conditions such as brainstem stroke, traumatic brain injury, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and cerebral palsy, among others).

Although a background in the speech, language, and hearing sciences or communication sciences and disorders is preferred, it is not required. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate an aptitude for managing complex projects and have an ability to solve problems independently.

Responsibilities

  • Design hybrid signal processing and predictive analytic algorithms for remote monitoring of speech and voice.
  • Construct physiological models to characterize statistical features of electromyographic, inertial motion sensing, and/or acoustic data.
  • Support projects through completion research design and planning, empirical, analytic, and dissemination phases

Key Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or have a BS/MS in engineering (electrical, biomedical, rehabilitation), computer science, or similar degree program
  • Strong grasp of digital signal processing techniques
  • Demonstrated ability for problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Fluent in Python or another high-level language
  • Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the areas of speech, language, and hearing sciences and/or communication sciences and disorders
  • Fluent in Python or another high-level language
  • Strong grasp of machine learning concepts and frameworks
