By default background items are queued so that the first started calculation will be the first to complete. Clicking Start Now will start a queued task in parallel with the currently running task. If a calculation needs to process a large data series, a shorter calculation can be started, run in parallel with the longer calculation, and complete first so that the results are visible quickly, without waiting for the longer running calculation to complete.
